Why does my hair wefts turn pink and orange
Some clients always had a question about why my hair extensions turn pink and orange after wearing it for a while .
Today we will tell you that what caused it ?
Blonde or light-colored hair extensions (wefts) turn pink primarily due to a chemical reaction between sun protection products, Perfume,Swimming , Strong ultraviolet rays and the dye used on the extensions.Because hair extensions are highly porous and lack natural scalp oils, they absorb these chemicals, leading to discoloration, particularly after sun exposure or swimming.
Here are the main reasons why your wefts are turning pink:
1.Sunscreen (The #1 Culprit): Ingredients like Avobenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) and Octocrylene, which are found in many sunscreens, react with UV rays and the chemical composition of the hair.
2.Ethanol (alcohol) in perfumes can indeed cause hair (especially bleached hair) to change color, such as turning pink, orange, or reddish.
3.Strong ultraviolet rays
Bleached hair: Cool tones (gray, blue, purple): These artificial pigments are extremely unstable and quickly fade after sun exposure.
Pink/orange showing: The remaining bleached base color (yellow) combines with the incompletely removed red pigment, resulting in an awkward warm orange or residual pink.
4.Hard Water
Water content has a big impact on the colour and texture of your hair extensions. Hard/high mineral content water can leave limescale and residue on your hair. With your natural hair, your scalp produces the necessary oils to counterbalance these minerals. However, as hair extensions are not attached to the scalp, these minerals aren’t able to counterbalance the minerals. Washing your hair extensions repeatedly using this type of water will make them dry and could potentially make them very damaged.
5.Sea Water
A lot of people think salt water is great for your hair, but it can be really damaging for your hair extensions; salt is a natural dehydrator and can potentially strip your hair of moisture and natural oils. This could lead to discolouration as the salt water will remove the hair pigmentation in your hair extension colour and will leave it a different colour to what it was before.
How to Fix and Prevent Pink Extensions:
Use Mineral-Based Sunscreen: Switch to sunscreens that do not contain Avobenzone or Octocrylene (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are safe alternatives).
Use a Clarifying/Chelating Treatment: Products like Malibu C Hard Water Treatment or Malibu C CPR are highly effective at stripping away mineral buildup and reversing the pink tint.
Rinse Immediately: Always rinse your extensions with fresh water immediately after swimming.
Avoid Over-Toning: Be careful with purple shampoos, as extensions can easily turn too grey or purple.
